This was another historic year for WHS Swimmers and Divers. The girls lost 35% of last years scoring to graduation, but added Claire Gilbert and got big performances from last years freshmen, Rachel Theiler, the Gibbons twins, and Ellie LeBuhn. Mariemont had too much depth for them in the dual meet and at League, but WHS had great performances from virtually the whole team to squeak out a win at Districts. Four new district records now have WHS names on them. Celia Oberholzer broke the 100 back record and the 200 medley team of Oberholzer, Akinbi, Theiler, and A Gibbons set a new mark as well. Claire Gilbert had a phenomenal district meet and set WHS records in both the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Celia Oberholzer had a career year, with backstroke records not only for WHS and league, but district and State as well. She repeated as State Backstroke Champion, which is incredible. WHS qualified in 6 individual and 3 relays to state. They swam in 3 championship heats and 4 consolation heats to emerge with 88 points and 7th place. Graduation will not be as painful as last year and 80+% of their scoring returns next year, so prospects look good for 2011.

The Boys were stronger this year than last, scoring more points at Classic, League, District, and State than in 2009. The relays were especially strong and dominated every meet, including Classics where the competition was DI. They had the luxury of selecting from 7 very strong swimmers, and as a result had State Champions in the 200 and 400 free relays and 2nd place in the 200 medley relay (with a WHS record) at Canton. At league they were champions in 8 of the 11 events, with 5 individual and 3 relay champions and won easily 446 to 329 for Mariemont. Two new league records, 200MR (Fischer, Proffitt, Murphy, Dunbar) and 100 breast (Proffitt) were established. Success at CHL was followed by Sectional and District team Championships. The 200 and 400 free relay teams now each hold the district record. The Medley relay set the district mark last year and although champions, did not break it this year. At Canton the boys swam in 14 individual and 3 relay events in prelims and on sat were in 6 individual consolation finals and 6 inividual and 3 relay championship finals. Cameron Merten finished 5th in 1 meter diving with a new WHS record. Wyoming finished a strong 2nd to University with 250 versus 298 points. Unfortunately WHS loses a tremendous amount of scoring power to graduation this year; CHL 35%, sectionals 32%, districts 40%, and state 55%. A strong group of sophomores and juniors will move up, but the numbers will be much smaller at the top. The depth may be reasonable and while they are not likely to be as strong as this year, it should be a very talented team.

In the last 2 years the Cowboys have established 25 new records. WHS records-8 girls and 5 boys. League records - 1 Girls and 3 boys. District records - 2 girls and 5 boys. State records - Celia Oberholzer. Before last year, to anyones knowledge, there had been only one WHS state champion. There have now been 5 in the last two years. Two last year and 3 this year. This crew has truly raised the bar in Wyoming HS swimming. They are indeed, a very tough act to follow.
