2010 marks the twenty seventhth Anniversary for the Southwest Classic which remains the largest invitational of its kind in the United States. The meet has grown so large the preliminaries were held at seven locations for the twentieth year. Approximately 112 schools entered over 2900 swimmers and 170 divers participate in this year's Classic. Prelims were held sat and sun morning at seven locations and the 16 fastest swimmers in each event swam in the finals sat and sun night at Keating Natatorium. This is a difficult event for WHS because they were competing with Div I schools as well as Div II schools. In spite of this, WHS Girls finished in 11th place and the Boys in 3rd place. Keep in mind that winning an event in the prelims is akin to winning the div I sectionals and winning in tne finals is similar to winning the Div I District. Celia Oberholzer won both the 100 and 200 back in the prelims and the 100 back in the finals. Zach Fischer won the 50 free and 100 back in the prelims, and Michael Murphy won the prelim 100 fly. Jonathan Proffitt won both prelims and finals in the 100 breast. The most amazing accomplishment was turned in by the 200 and 400 medley relay team which beat all of the larger div I schools (including St X). This amazing feat was accomplished by Zach Fischer, Jonathan Proffitt, Michael Murphy, and Owen Dunbar (200MR), Pat Dierker (400MR). Fantastic!!! Highlights of Sun results follow:
